What is coco peat?
Coco peat, also called cocopeat, coir pith or coco coir dust, is the fine, spongy material left after long fibres are removed from coconut husk. It is used as a soilless growing medium because it holds water, stays airy and is renewable.
What is coco peat used for?
Growers use it for hydroponics, greenhouse vegetables and berries, seed starting, nursery plants, potting mixes, rooftop gardens and cut flowers.
Is coco peat better than peat moss?
For many growers, yes. Coco peat is renewable and re-wets easily, while peat moss is harvested from slow-forming peatlands. Both hold water, but coco peat is usually the more sustainable choice.
How do I use a coco peat block?
Soak the block in clean water until it expands, break it up into a fluffy medium, rinse if needed, then fill containers or mix it with other media. Add nutrients once the plants are in.
What does buffered coco peat mean?
Buffered coco peat is treated with a calcium-magnesium solution so the natural potassium and sodium on the fibre do not lock out the nutrients your plants need.
What is low EC coco peat?
EC measures soluble salts. Low EC coco peat has been washed to keep salts low, which matters for seedlings and hydroponic crops. Ask us for the EC and pH of each batch.
How much does a 5kg coco peat block make?
A compressed 5kg block expands to roughly 60 to 75 litres of loose coco peat when fully hydrated, depending on the product and how much water is added.
Is coco peat good for hydroponics?
Yes. Washed, buffered coco peat drains well, holds water and gives roots plenty of air, which is why it is widely used for tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and berries.
Can coco peat be reused?
Often yes. Many growers reuse coco peat for another crop cycle after flushing and re-buffering it, and it can be composted afterwards.
